As a Blogger for Insurance School Florida , I see Florida making headlines again . A South Florida surgeon was made to pay Five-thousand dollars for taking out a patient’s healthy kidney instead of his gall bladder. The Florida Board ruled that he was not inept or reckless , just “unlucky.” Which one is unlucky again ? So the State Board recommended 50 hours of community service. I hope he doesn’t volunteer in a soup kitchen, he might switch pestitcide for kidney beans. Will the board’s ruling diminish the victim’s chances for suing for liability? The patient was 87, so he’d better hurry up . The insurance is ready to defend the doctor .

There have been famous cases of the wrong limb being amputated . You enter with a single bad arm and end up with none that work . Make sure you look out for those dyslectic doctors . Because of lawsuits of this type , when a friend went in for knee surgery, they used a Sharpie to write “NO” on her kneecap which was not to be operated on. That made me nervous . Kind of like seeing that your pilot has Post-It Notes on his hat with flying instructions .
Malpractice insurance is one of doctors’ biggest expenses . The only idea the Republicans had when discussing Healtcare reform , was to limit malpractice liability . They tried to claim that it would save a huge portion of healthcare costs, when the Congressional Budget Office found it might save one or two % . Lawsuits are there to keep people accountable. Unable to make sure that my physician doesn’t maim or kill me is a legitimate worry .
But should you have monetary damages that are greater than the doctor’s income made in ten years? However some doctors are extremely rich . In Orlando, a doctor who owned a Ferrari, a Lamborghini Roadster , and a Rolls won like $ 110 Million. All I’m saying is that the Super Rich shouldn’t be allowed to play the Lottery , but I might like it if he accidentally removed my small toe.
